I have had the great pleasure of meeting several new residents of Esquimalt in the past 3 weeks. As Mayor I initiated a program to provide new residents with a welcome package and I visit them personally to deliver it. New residents hear about this from realtors, neighbors, Facebook and even Country Grocer staff, and the word is spreading. I feel this is a valuable program for many reasons. The information I provide includes everything from a welcome letter, Parks and recreation information, waste management, water conservation, community events information, and our Walking tours and tourism map.
It is a wonderful opportunity for residents to be connected to their community immediately. New residents are hopefully the next volunteers and the succession for event organization, sport volunteers, council committee people.
I can tell you that residents I meet are here because they see and feel the sense of community Esquimalt has. Each and every one of them mentioned this as strong criteria for moving to Esquimalt, many of them coming from other areas of the region, the lower mainland or beyond.
New residents I am meeting cover the broad demographic spectrum, but there is an abundance of young families among them. This bodes well for our community to be able to continue to hold its welcoming family oriented feel.
If you know of a new resident to Esquimalt please don’t hesitate to have them contact me directly or the Mayor’s office so we can connect them to all that we have to offer in Esquimalt. I receive compliments about Esquimalt daily and I respond by saying that it is truly the people of our community that make it the gem it is in the region. Welcoming newcomers is part of ensuring this!
